The Benefits of Reiki: What It Can and Cannot Do

When you look up the benefits of Reiki you usually find two extremes: lists promising a cure for everything, and articles saying the whole thing is placebo. The practical truth is somewhere in between, and it deserves to be told without exaggeration in either direction.

Here is what I observe, after years of sessions and courses.

Real rest

This is the most consistent benefit and the least spectacular. Many people fall asleep during the session, and those who do not still reach a state of relaxation they would not easily reach otherwise.

What follows matters more: people frequently report that, on the nights after a session, they sleep more deeply. For someone who has been exhausted for months, that is not a detail.

A drop in inner tension

I am not talking about blood pressure, but about that state of continuous alertness you end up in after a long stretch of stress: you cannot stop thinking, you startle easily, your shoulders are up around your ears without your noticing.

Reiki works well here. Not because it solves the cause - if you have a job that is grinding you down, a session will not change it - but because it breaks the cycle just enough for you to breathe and see more clearly.

A space where nothing is asked of you

This is a benefit people do not talk about, but one I notice often. In a Reiki session you do not have to explain, justify yourself, perform or talk. You lie down, and that is it.

For people used to always being the strong one, it is sometimes the first hour that month in which nothing is asked of them.

A tool you can use on your own

If you learn Reiki at Level 1, you gain something you can use at home, for free, any time. You do not depend on appointments and you do not depend on me.

Many people come to the course for exactly this: not to become therapists, but to have something to hand for the hard evenings.

The situations people come with most often

So that none of this stays abstract, here are the concrete contexts I get the most requests for.

Sleep. By far the most common. People who take a long time to fall asleep, who wake at three in the morning for no reason, or who sleep eight hours and get up just as tired. It is also the area where people report the clearest difference.

Periods of prolonged stress. Not one bad day, but months of tension: a project that never ends, a conflict that drags on, a worry that never lets up. The body stays on alert and no longer switches off by itself.

After a loss or a break-up. Reiki does not resolve grief here, nor should it. What it does is give you an hour in which nothing is asked of you and in which you can breathe. Sometimes that is all it takes to be able to carry on.

Exhaustion with no clear cause. The tests come back fine, the doctor finds nothing, but you are running on reserve. Here I always recommend having the medical investigations done first, with energy work going alongside them.

Before a demanding period. Rarer, but the people who do this have a point: it is easier to set off rested than to repair yourself afterwards.

How long the effect lasts

The right question, and too few people ask it.

For a single session, in an otherwise balanced period, people usually describe a few good days of deeper sleep and calm. If the situation that brought you carries on unchanged - the same job, the same conflict - the effect fades, naturally.

This is the honest limit of this kind of work: Reiki helps you settle again, it does not hold reality still. That is why, for situations that drag on, it makes sense either to have a series of sessions or to learn it yourself, so that you do not depend on appointments.

What Reiki cannot do

Here I have to be very clear.

Reiki does not treat or cure disease. It does not diagnose, and it does not replace tests, a consultation or the treatment prescribed by your doctor. If you have a health problem, your first stop is the doctor. If you are undergoing treatment, continue it. Energy work can go alongside medical care, never instead of it.

Reiki does not solve your problems for you. It will not change your relationship, your job or your finances. It can help you have the clarity and the energy to change them yourself, which is a different thing.

Reiki does not produce guaranteed results. People respond differently. Some feel a clear change after one session, others do not notice much. I have no way of promising you which group you will be in.

What the studies say

There is research suggesting an effect on relaxation, anxiety and general wellbeing, often as a complementary therapy in medical settings. The quality of many of these studies is limited, however, and there is no evidence that Reiki treats disease.

I would rather tell you that than quote you one favourable study selectively. Reiki works well where deep rest and a drop in inner tension work - and that is valuable enough that no exaggeration is needed.

How to find out whether it does you good

The only real way is to try a session and see. You do not have to believe anything in advance and you are not committing to anything.

If you would rather understand first what it is all about, I have written a complete guide to what Reiki is, where it comes from and how a session works. And if you already know you want to practise yourself, the Level 1 course is the starting point.
